In this volume of Aces Weekly we're about to run a tough story with a degree of roughness that's unusual for us. In the usual run of violent action we feature, we keep things low key, or make sure they don't get too high key, because we don't want to step outside the boundaries we set of being inclusive of all. In general drama and fantasy this is ok because little of it refers to a serious social point that needs the fullest expression. But when a story does have such a need, because it's about a factual situation - even though depicted in a fiction - I think it's justifiable to take a different view. The Hyena Man is about the plight of the child soldier in Africa. Its writer is producing a piece for us we'll be featuring in Extras soon about why he so much wanted to create a story about this subject. For ourselves, we're glad to be able to run it, for all its grim, and often pantomimic, horror, because we know it's merely a pale shadow of a reality that many face and that we, thankfully, don't have to...
